The management at Karuturi realised that since Ethiopia offers a better value proposition for consolidating its floriculture business, the company intends to expand the rose business from that geography and leverage the knowledge and experience built in the floriculture business for entering into other synergistic and attractive segments within the agro-based, horticulture and food processing industry out of India. Processing of Gherkins emerged as attractive option.
Gherkins, pasteurised cucumbers, by virtue of being an oil-free, natural and healthy food are one of the important constituents of meals overseas.
With the robust demand for gherkins worldwide and the increasing trend towards outsourcing the cultivation and processing of the same to India due to favourable climatic conditions, possibility of year-round cultivation, cheaper labour, technical expertise and favourable government policies encouraging the horticulture industry, this segment appears promising.
In addition to the positive industry outlook for gherkins, the company.s decade plus experience in floriculture has helped it understand the intricacies of contract farming and cold chain logistics, two factors which are critical for succeeding in the gherkins business.
